Caravan Insurance and the Snow

February 3rd, 2012

Caravan insurance has been in the news recently. Following the recent spell of icy weather there has been a big increase in the number of caravan owners finding out just what their insurance policy entitles them to when they are involved in an accident, figures show.

Used Car Expert magazine states that it has experienced a rise in the number of people making enquiries about disputes, which could include those keen to discover if their caravan insurance policy will cover them and pay out.

Their website stated that some drivers had seen their cars and caravans written off as a result of these snow-related incidents, for instance when a parked car is hit by another vehicle.

Editor of the website, Matt Tumbridge revealed that “It is particularly frustrating for car owners who weren’t even at the car when the accident happened.” Noting that many of the country’s roads have been left untreated by councils during the cold snap, greatly increasing the chances of these kind of collisions happening.

Leading replacement car solutions firm Accident Exchange have reiterated the law to motorists, stressing that in the circumstance where a car in front of you slides and your vehicle is in collision with then, you will still be regarded as liable.

It is very important for caravan owners to have a clear understanding of what their insurance policy covers them for, but equally as importantly, what it doesn’t cover them for.

Online Static Caravan Insurance

February 1st, 2012

If you already own or are thinking of buying a static caravan, then you should be buying your static caravan insurance online. It is important that caravan owners get an insurance policy that adequately covers their needs. To get the right policy you need the right information, and the internet is an invaluable resource for this.

Caravan owners are well advised to make use of the large number of caravan insurance companies providing policies online. The companies sites provide loads of helpful information and documents which will outline what their policies provide. And the beauty of this is that it is easy for owners to compare one company with another. Going for the cheapest policy is often a false economy as a lack of adequate cover could come back to financially haunt the policy holder.

Touring and static caravan insurance policies differ somewhat, as each sort of caravan is prone to some of its own particular risks. Static caravans are often left unoccupied for fairly lengthy spells which make them prone to being broken into. Public Liability and loss of income cover should certainly be in the equation if the caravan is rented out. Not only this though, as residents will require alternative accommodation should a rented caravan become unfit to stay in. Winter also provides a challenge for static caravan owners as when they are unattended they can be prone to suffering burst water pipes. When considering a policy these are the types of things that need to be evaluated.

Knowing what you need to cover and for how much it should be covered is the key to getting the correct caravan insurance. You can then make sure a policy is right for you using the resources available on the internet to compare between what is available. You can also save money by getting several quotes from some of the many available online insurers.

Caravan owners can be extra sure they are suitably insuring their caravan and protecting their wallets by combining a little thought and effort with some common sense, and allying this with the wealth of information available online. All in all the internet is a powerful ally for caravan owners when searching for static caravan insurance online.

Your Static Caravan Insurance Online

January 30th, 2012

When you are searching for static caravan insurance online you will want to be sure that you get the cheapest suitable policy for your requirements but also you will need to ensure that the policy covers everything you need covered. You should also compare any limits on the policy as one provider may offer more than another for the same price.

Something you will probably want to check in the policy is whether the freezer contents are covered in the event that the contents are ruined. For instance, if the electricity was to be lost for a period of time and the contents of your freezer defrosted it could be quite costly to replace them. However if these are included in your insurance cover you would receive money towards replacing them.

Whilst your personal belongings will be covered in the policy, you will want to check your static caravan insurance policy to find out if the policy includes cover for any monies lost from the caravan by theft. It may be the case that you have quite a large amount of money if you are on holiday in a static caravan, and if this gets stolen while you were away from the van then you stand to the lose all of the money unless your caravan insurance includes this loss in the cover.

If your caravan insurance does cover you for loss of money, then you should check the policy documents to find out what limits would be imposed on this, as the insurance providers will have a limit as to the maximum amount you can claim.

Time Is Money: Save Them Both When Buying Caravan Insurance

January 28th, 2012

We all want more of it, it is money but you can’t buy it. Time, time, time, there simply isn’t enough of it, at least that is how it feels to many of us. Our lives are overflowing with things we need to be doing, places we need to be. The problem with this is that things can easily be overlooked, pushed to the side, or put to the back of a very long queue. An example of this is caravan insurance. It can be very tempting to just buy the first policy you see, but this could well turn out to be not only a false economy, but also a complete waste of time.

‘The right insurance, at the right price’ is our motto here at caravan-insurance-cover.co.uk. If you don’t take the time to find your caravan insurance you will highly likely you will find neither. An insurance that doesn’t cover you for all the things you really need to cover, and maybe covers you unecessarily for things you don’t. And an insurance that costs you a good deal more than it should do. The good news however is that there are ways to minimise this effort.

First up, give the High Street a miss and fire up the internet. Online you’ll find a wealth of information that in the dark days before the internet would have taken you weeks to pull together. Not only that, but you can easily get multiple quotes from a variety of different insurers to make sure you are getting a good price.

Finding out what is on offer from different policies will enable you to make an informed choice about what you need to be covered for, and what you don’t need. Avoiding insuring yourself for unecessary things is a good way of saving money. For instance, if you do not take your caravan onto the continent, then there is no point including that on your insurance.

The easiest way to find multiple prices is to come to a site like www.caravan-insurance-cover.co.uk, which will enable you to get prices from some of the foremost online providers. This takes all the hassle out of searching around the net, allowing you more time to actually enjoy your caravan time. Being able to buy your caravan insurance online is a massive benefit to caravan owners.

Security and Insurance for Touring Caravans

January 26th, 2012

Owning a touring caravan is a very enjoyable experience, and brings about many pleasant memories. However there is of course always the question of security. Given that a caravan is often a hefty investment, often running into thousands of pounds, it is obvious that good security is a must.

Fortunately there are a number of things you can do to improve your security (and at the same time protect your insurance). You will often find that hitch locks and/or wheel clamps are a minimum requirement for an insurance policy. And that they must always be used whenever the caravan is unhintched or unoccupied. Alarms are another good form of security, and although a more expensive option, tracking devices have an excellent track record at protecting caravans from theft.

The great side-effect of improved security is the discounts you can achieve on your touring caravan insurance policy. These can be up to 25% discount for a tracking device. Bear in mind though that discounts will only be applied up to a certain level, and that any additional security precautions will not attract discounts. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have other forms of security, because they still reduce the chance that you will have to claim on your insurance policy.

Another thing to bear in mind is storage of the caravan. If it is not kept at a secure storage site, the next best thing is to have it behind locked gates in your drive. It is not unknown for caravans to be stolen from driveways, so don’t believe that just because it is outside your house that it is necessarily safe.

Security is of course a big issue for touring caravan owners, because it can save you decent amounts of money on your insurance, make it less likely for you to need to claim on your insurance. It also increases the peace of mind you experience, allowing you to enjoy those wonderful trips away with the worries of ‘what if…’ Security and a good caravan insurance policy are two sides of the same coin.

Caravan Insurance Online: Some Observations

January 24th, 2012

Searching for caravan insurance online makes the task of getting a good policy a whole lot easier. There are quite a number of insurers available with websites ready and willing to sell you their wares. And given how many people have internet access these days, this has become a major market. The internet has been a revolution for so many reasons, and this is one of them.

In some ways this ease of availability comes with a danger, that of buying a policy as a knee jerk reaction. All you have to do is click that button, and you’re sorted!

But you need similar due diligence as in the bad old days of phoning around the various providers. If you make judgements based solely on price you may find you are inadequately covered, and if you buy the first policy that matches your requirements you may well find yourself paying well over the odds. So you need to find a balance.

As an example. Imagine buying a static caravan insurance policy online, thinking you got a bargain, as it was £50 cheaper than the next cheapest quote. Good result? That depends… Let’s say that the static caravan is situated in a park that is on a known flood plane, and the site and your caravan flood. You ring the insurers, but they tell you that it is not covered because it is in a known flood area. That policy for £50 more may well have had such cover. Clearly this is not a good way to save money.

So, you need first and foremost to make sure you have suitable cover, and then you can work on the price. This is where the power of the internet comes into its own. Information is the key, after all it is not called the information superhighway for nothing.

The internet makes it easy to compare coverage as well as price. Identify the policies that cover you adequately, and then compare the prices of them. As we here at caravan-insurance-cover.com like to say ‘The Right Cover, at the Right Price’.

Caravan Insurance Online For The Over 50′s

January 22nd, 2012

Specialist over 50′s insurers Saga have been advising caravan owners to go online for caravan insurance quotes. And giving that more than a third of the over fifties are intending to go on a caravan holiday this year, this is an important message. They urge people taking a caravan trip this year to ensure they are properly covered by their insurance policy.

Of course it is not the only grey brigade that are discovering the joys of caravanning. There has been a big increase in the last year in the UK of people taking caravan holidays as a great way to get a great holiday at a budget price. The ‘staycation’ is now a word in everyday use, and this is reflected in the fifteen percent increase seen in caravan sales in 2009.

Whilst caravanning is a great way to holiday on a budget, it is a false economy to ignore caravan insurance. Doing so could prove to be a very costly mistake in the event that your caravan gets damaged, broken into, or even stolen. And it is a mistake to believe that car insurance provides coverage, as once you are on site the caravan will not be covered.

The advice from Saga is as true to all caravan owners as it is to the over 50′s, get online to get yourself the best caravan insurance quote you can. This is where www.caravan-insurance-online.co.uk comes in useful, giving you not only access to the best insurers available online, but also the information to help you get the insurance you need at the best price.

Online Caravan Insurance Security

January 20th, 2012

If you pay for caravan insurance online it is important that you know that you are sending your sending your card details safely. To be able to be sure that you are, you need to know how to tell a ‘secure’ website from an unsecured website. Most caravan insurance websites, like any sites that take payments online, will be a mix of secure and non-secure web pages. It is very important that any page in which you enter credit or debit card details, or bank account information is a secure page.

There are a couple of easy ways to tell if a page is secure. The first is to check the web address. If the address begins “https://” rather than “http://” then you know you are on a secure page; indeed the additional ‘s’ stands for secure. What this means is that the information you are going to send over the internet is encrypted, and cannot be intercepted and read by an unscrupulous third party. A site that has ‘https’ at the start of its address is secured by what is known as SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layer, and is a very secure means of sending information online.

On some sites you may see details of a certificate provider, the most well known being Verisign. There will be a link on the site to the certificate providers site, which confirms they have a certificate from them. These certificates vouch for the authenticity of the web site, and mean you can trust the company. Also make sure you check there are contact details that you can actually contact, this is the sign of a credible company, one you can ring up if you get stuck whilst applying for their caravan insurance.

It is right to be very cautious when spending money on the internet, it has more than its fair share of charlatans and miscreants trying to get hold of your information and pull a fast one. However, these simple checks make your details much more secure. So when you are next buying your caravan insurance online, or indeed spending any money, make sure you have checked the security of the page you are typing your valuable private information into. Otherwise someone will be only too happy to get it, and either use it to try to get your money, or sell it on to someone else who will try to get your money.

Buying Static Caravans and Insurance

January 18th, 2012

If you’re thinking of buying a static caravan, then there are a number of things you should you should consider prior to investing your hard-earned money.

When you have found a site you are interested in, it is important that you check with the owners whether the site has ever been subject to flood or storm damage. If it has then this could prevent you getting reasonably priced static caravan insurance for a caravan on the site.

Even if the site owners say it has not suffered flooding you should also check if the site is in an area that is at risk of flooding. To do this you need to know the post code of the site. If the site is in England or Wales, visit the Environment Agency website (at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/default.aspx) and input the post code into the box on the right hand side of the screen. If the site is in Scotland then you should check on then Scottish Environment Protection Agency website (at http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=sepa).

(Please note that these URL’s are liable to change occasionally. If you find this is the case, please inform us so we can update this information.)

You can also check on http://maps.google.co.uk/maps to identify more precisely where the site and particular caravans are and then refer back to the flood map for a more precise indicator to the flooding risk presented. Areas that in particular can be problematic in terms of insurance because of flooding are Norfolk and Lincolnshire, low-lying coastal areas of North Wales, and sites close to major rivers such as the Avon and the Severn rivers.

As with most things in life it is always better to shop around for your static caravan insurance, as this could save you a good deal of money.

You will find that nearly all static caravan/holiday home sales are of sited caravans. The sale will be made either by the owner in the case of a second-hand caravan (with the permission of the site owner), or by the site owner themselves.

Occassionally it may be possible to buy a site without a van upon it an arrange with the site owner to have it sited there. In such circumstances they will expect a significant payment for allowing the siting of a caravan as they would have expected to make a profit on the sale of a sited caravan.

As a result you will pay thousands of pounds more for a sited caravan than an unsited caravan. But you should bear in mind that the amount of insurance should cover the true unsited retail price of the caravan plus the cost of resiting a replacement caravan if it is damaged beyond repair or destroyed. You will find that some policies require that you include costs required for site clearance also.

In your contract there will be rules dictating what must happen in the event of your caravan being destroyed. This may be that the caravan must be replaced with a brand new equivalent model of caravan. If this is the case then you should buy a new-for-old caravan insurance policy, otherwise you may find that your policy falls an expensive way short of what is required.

You should bear in mind that signing up for a static caravan should not be undertaken lightly. The contract can be onerous, and you should seriously consider getting a solicitor to look over it, and make sure that you fully understand what you are signing up to before you put pen to paper. You should in particular make sure that:

  • you have security of tenure
  • you understand what will happen if you ever want to sell the caravan, and are happy with it.
  • you check if there are rules that force you to buy a new caravan after a set number of years.

A very useful publication from the Office of Fair Trading called “Guidance on unfair terms in holiday caravan agreements” can be found at http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/unfair_contract_terms/oft734.pdf.

Make sure that you get yourself informed if you are thinking of buying a static caravan, and make sure you have the right insurance policy.

Cheap Caravan Insurance Isn’t Always Cheerful

January 16th, 2012

When it’s time to renew your caravan insurance it’s easy to be tempted by big shiny headlines offering you cheap insurance. It is important that you understand what precisely is on offer, otherwise you are unlikely to find the policy that suits your needs adequately.

So it is important to bear a few things in mind:

  • it may be cheap to buy, but if it doesn’t cover you properly then it may turn out to be very expensive.
  • people use their caravans differently, and as a result have different requirements for their caravan insurance, so the price needs to be viewed in this context.

You will also find that the insurance providers will require you to take certain measures to reduce the risk of your caravan getting stolen and/or damaged, among them may well be:

  • a requirement to use wheelclamps and/or hitchlocks to prevent theft of the caravan. You will probably find that a wheelclamp is required if your caravan is unattended, however if it is both unattached and unattended you will probably also need a hitchlock.
  • a requirement that if you have an awning and leave the caravan unattended it will need to be securely stored. If you don’t and the awning is damaged in a storm you will probably find that the damage will not be covered by the insurance.

You may find that your caravan insurance may not be the cheapest you can locate, but don’t make the mistake of going down the false economy route. Make sure you have adequate coverage before you part with your hard-earned cash, because you often get what you pay for.
