Cheaper Caravan Insurance?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

The caravan insurance industry will be breathing a collective sigh of relief today as a four Irish travellers have been found guilty of conspiracy to steal, following a three-month trial at Winchester Crown Court.

In the twelve months following their arrests in March 2007 there was a nationwide drop in caravan thefts to the tune of 47%! Good news not only for caravanners, but for the people who insure the caravans.

Detective Inspector Matt Davey, from Wiltshire Police described the investigation as ‘long and complex.’ Close to £1 million worth of caravans and personal possessions were recovered as part of the investigation. This haul included vehicles, cash, jewellery, china and crystal.

Overall, nineteen police became involved in the operation to catch them, which culminated in a raid in March 2007 on their site in Gloucester. And a second raid involving 120 officers from Wiltshire Police was carried out on another site near Swindon in October 2007.

In total they discovered £970,000 of stolen goods, including £700,000 worth of vehicles, £70,000 cash,  £80,000 of china and £20,000 of crystal, and £100,000 of jewellery.

So caravan owners and insurers will be able to rest easier as these scum bags have been taken out of circulation, hopefully for a long while. Now, given that there are fewer thefts of caravans, this means there are fewer insurance payouts, which in turn should mean that it should lead to cheaper caravan insurance… that makes sense doesn’t it. I wonder if this will be the case?

Record Year for the Caravan Club

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

What a year it has been for the so-called ”Staycation’. The credit crunch inflicted trend continues to have a tremendous effect on the caravanning industry. The Caravan Club are reporting bed nights up almost 500,000 from 15.6 million last year.

There was also a rise in the number of first-time caravanners, with a record number of new members joining at the International Caravan and Motorhome Show in October. This is a significant increase of 23% on the 2009.

Even the colder autumn months failed to dampen enthusiasm for the Great Outdoors, with large numbers taking weekend breaks in their caravan well past the summer. This is borne out by the fact that 80 Caravan Club sites will stay open until the New Year and 50 are open all-year round.

The Caravan Club’s Director of Marketing, Nick Lomas said ‘Our season has been terrific with many hundreds of thousands of happy caravanners. Looking to the future, bookings for 2010 look set to be buoyant, which is great news for the domestic tourism industry.’

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

What a year 2009 has been for the Swift Group, the UK’s largest caravan and motorhome manufacturer. Against the backdrop of recession their fortunes have been on the up and up.

At the recent International Caravan and Motorhome Show, held at the NEC in Birmingham, they achieved record sales of £28 million, up almost £10 million last years show. An astounding result, and one that Commercial Director Nick Page stated had “exceeded our wildest expectations.”

Not only did they achieve this, but they have also received awards galore at the three most prestigious awards ceremonies in the industry:

  • 2010 Caravan Industry Awards – Tourer of the Year Award – Winner Swift Conqueror 630
  • 2010 Caravan Industry Awards – Best Tourer over £16,000 – Winner Swift Conqueror 630
  • 2010 Caravan Industry Awards – Best Tourer under £12,500 – Winner Swift Charisma 220
  • Which Caravan Awards 2010 – Best Lightweight Caravan – Winner Sprite Musketeer TD

  • Practical Caravan Awards 2010 – Best Caravan for Ralliers – Runner up Swift Charisma 565

But even this is not the extent of their achievements. They have this year jumped 40 places in the Sunday Times Top Track 250 covering Britain’s biggest mid-market private companies.

Powered on by the comeback of the staycation, the company is really bucking the current economic gloom engulfing the world. We at caravan-insurance-cover.co.uk wish them all the very best of luck.

New Caravan Manufacturer

Monday, October 19th, 2009

The first new manufacturer of caravans in a number of years has launched in the UK. Stealth Caravans from Dunster House have launched the X53, X58, and X63. The 53 is a 2 berth, the 58 a 4 birth, and the 63 a 6 birth. With prices ranging from £17,845 for the X53 S, to £24,349 for the X63 SE-L, the range is out there to take on the big boys.

Established in 1994, Dunster House Ltd is a family run Company.  They are already the UK’s leading Log Cabin Company, one of the largest UK Timber Climbing Frame Companies, and also produce many other successful and diverse product lines as well. But now they have moved into caravanning, driven by the enthusiasm of Co Managing Director Alex Murphy, himself a keen caravanner.

Here’s what he has to say about it: “Stealth was derived from my own experiences of caravans. I’d often found traditional caravan designs to be compromised, especially on use of space. As a regular caravan user I thought about what aspects were important to me and what I wanted from a caravan – I wanted somewhere comfortable and practical, with a large kitchen worksurface, a large end washroom with a shower cubicle, and a fixed island bed with no corner cut offs. These key features are the focus of the new unique layouts.”

We wish you all the best in your endeavours.

Secure Storage For Caravans

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Caravan security and insurance are two sides of the same coin. Security providing your first line of defence, Insurance your back-up. Here at caravan-insurance-cover.co.uk we are dedicated not only to helping to find the right caravan insurance for caravan owners, and helping them save money on that insurance, but also to helping owners improve their caravan safety and security so they are less likely to have to fall back on their insurance (and thus further save money).

Last year, crime statistics showed that over 5,000 caravans were stolen in the UK. The wealth of information available here at  caravan-insurance-cover.co.uk will show you a number of ways that you can reduce your chances of becoming one of these statistics. One of the ways you can do this is by your choice of storage.

If you are a touring caravan owner, then storage is an issue you have had to think about. Many owners store their caravans on the drive of their home, where they can be quite well protected from potential theft. This is the cheapest way to store a caravan, offering the distinct advantage that you can keep an eye on your caravan, and also carry out any required maintenance.

There are however disadvantages, in that having a caravan sat on your drive most of the year can offend neighbours and could even breach covenants on your property.  Also, when your caravan isn’t there burglars with local knowledge may be rubbing their hands together with glee.

Other owners tend to leave their caravans at sites, either permanently sited, or held in storage and bought out when required by the site owners.

The other option is to keep them in a secure storage facility. These can be either open-air or under-cover facilities. Open-air facilities are the cheaper option, but leaves your caravan exposed to the elements.

If you decide that secure storage is for you, the next question is how do you find and choose the right storage site? This is where the Caravan Storage Site Owners’ Association (CaSSOA) can come in useful. Set up in 1999 with the intention of combatting caravan theft, their take on security is that whilst the majority of people take the attitude that “if they want to get in they will,” they by contrast sum their ethos up as; “If you want to keep them out you can.”

The explicit aims of the Association as as follows:

  • To act as a nationally recognised body providing an official register of safe and secure storage sites.
  • To help site owners improve their security and services, to prevent caravan crime.
  • To provide a strong lobbying voice to influence the views of people who make a difference in caravanning.
  • To reassure caravan owner’s they can be confident that every CaSSOA site has taken reasonable measures to protect the stored caravans.

The association now have over 550 sites nationwide storing over 80,000 caravans between them, and are supported by 13 specialist caravan insurers, including those featured on www.caravan-insurance-cover.co.uk.

To achieve membership all sites undergo a risk survey. The risk is assessed by reference to what may be termed the canons of security:

  • Environmental vulnerability
  • Crime patterns or trends
  • Local economic and social conditions
  • General site design
  • Access

Based on the results of those surveys the Association ranks sites by giving them awards as follows:

  • Gold Award: These are the most secure sites, and offer a very high standards of security. All other risks to the stored caravans have been addressed, and wherever possible eliminated.
  • Silver Award: These sites also offer a high level of security.
  • Bronze Award: These sites also offer a good level of security. This is termed as the entry level for sites wanting to become members of the association.

The good news is that caravan insurance companies often offer discounts for secure storage. The insurers Safeguard offer up to 15% based on the CaSSOA grading of the site. But as I said earlier, even better is that as a result of putting your caravan into secure storage, you are less likely to need to claim on this insurance.

The associations’ website can be found at http://www.cassoa.co.uk, and provides search facility to locate a site where near you live or where you where you take your holidays. If you are thinking of secure storage their site is very much worth a visit.

His Name is Rio and he Stayed at Prestatyn Sands

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Oh Rio, Rio, and he earns a hundred grand (a week that is).

Well by jingo, loadsamoney England football player Rio Ferdinand, more akin to luxury cruises, yachts, and paradise islands has taken his family on a weekend caravan holiday at Prestatyn Sands.

Described as the “gateway to the North Wales coast”, where the “mountain air meets salty sea breezes,” the Haven owned park played host to the family Ferdinand in one of their top-of-the-range Prestige caravans, putting him back £400.

He was mobbed by children as he played in the park with his sons, and also had a go on the go-karting track at the park.

A Haven spokeswoman described how “affable” he was with the children, saying he “signed autographs, and then tried out the go-kart track.” Pondering why an internationally famous multi-millionaire would have chosen such a cheap option for a holiday the spokeswoman added: ““Perhaps he recognised that with two young children, people like to get a value-for-money family holiday and perhaps children are unimpressed by five-star hotels and would rather have go-karting.”

It’s good to see Rio backing the ‘staycation’ and the British Tourism industry. Now all he has to do is win the World Cup next year.

Happy Birthday to the Caravan Channel

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

You may not be aware of this little gem, but ‘The Caravan Channel’ is a tv programme that you can find on the niche channel ‘Information TV’, and it’s celebrating its third birthday. It can be found on Sky Channel 166 and Freesat 402, and in this time it has produced 77 half hour shows.

Chris Gosling is the brains behind this program, and is a caravanner himself. The idea grew from a website that Gosling operated for a few months prior to Information TV offering to air the programme.

The program’s content is focussed on caravans, motorhomes, campsites and camping, and other related topics. Gosling says he makes “programmes that talk to existing members of this thriving outdoor community,” Gosling said, “and that attracts new users and buyers, too. On a number of occasions we’ve had people come up and say since watching the programme, they’ve bought a new caravan – that’s down to us.”

An estimated 100,000 people watch the program regularly, which isn’t big in TV terms but is enormous in comparison with the industry’s consumer magazines, which have about half that circulation. The programme is produced each fortnight and each edition is aired 8 times over its 2 week life.

If you don’t watch the show, tune in some time to see what you’re missing.

Altogether now.. Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Caravan Channel, happy birthday to you.
