Your Static Caravan Insurance Online

Monday, January 30th, 2012

When you are searching for static caravan insurance online you will want to be sure that you get the cheapest suitable policy for your requirements but also you will need to ensure that the policy covers everything you need covered. You should also compare any limits on the policy as one provider may offer more than another for the same price.

Something you will probably want to check in the policy is whether the freezer contents are covered in the event that the contents are ruined. For instance, if the electricity was to be lost for a period of time and the contents of your freezer defrosted it could be quite costly to replace them. However if these are included in your insurance cover you would receive money towards replacing them.

Whilst your personal belongings will be covered in the policy, you will want to check your static caravan insurance policy to find out if the policy includes cover for any monies lost from the caravan by theft. It may be the case that you have quite a large amount of money if you are on holiday in a static caravan, and if this gets stolen while you were away from the van then you stand to the lose all of the money unless your caravan insurance includes this loss in the cover.

If your caravan insurance does cover you for loss of money, then you should check the policy documents to find out what limits would be imposed on this, as the insurance providers will have a limit as to the maximum amount you can claim.

Caravan Insurance Online: Some Observations

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Searching for caravan insurance online makes the task of getting a good policy a whole lot easier. There are quite a number of insurers available with websites ready and willing to sell you their wares. And given how many people have internet access these days, this has become a major market. The internet has been a revolution for so many reasons, and this is one of them.

In some ways this ease of availability comes with a danger, that of buying a policy as a knee jerk reaction. All you have to do is click that button, and you’re sorted!

But you need similar due diligence as in the bad old days of phoning around the various providers. If you make judgements based solely on price you may find you are inadequately covered, and if you buy the first policy that matches your requirements you may well find yourself paying well over the odds. So you need to find a balance.

As an example. Imagine buying a static caravan insurance policy online, thinking you got a bargain, as it was £50 cheaper than the next cheapest quote. Good result? That depends… Let’s say that the static caravan is situated in a park that is on a known flood plane, and the site and your caravan flood. You ring the insurers, but they tell you that it is not covered because it is in a known flood area. That policy for £50 more may well have had such cover. Clearly this is not a good way to save money.

So, you need first and foremost to make sure you have suitable cover, and then you can work on the price. This is where the power of the internet comes into its own. Information is the key, after all it is not called the information superhighway for nothing.

The internet makes it easy to compare coverage as well as price. Identify the policies that cover you adequately, and then compare the prices of them. As we here at caravan-insurance-cover.com like to say ‘The Right Cover, at the Right Price’.

Buying Static Caravans and Insurance

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

If you’re thinking of buying a static caravan, then there are a number of things you should you should consider prior to investing your hard-earned money.

When you have found a site you are interested in, it is important that you check with the owners whether the site has ever been subject to flood or storm damage. If it has then this could prevent you getting reasonably priced static caravan insurance for a caravan on the site.

Even if the site owners say it has not suffered flooding you should also check if the site is in an area that is at risk of flooding. To do this you need to know the post code of the site. If the site is in England or Wales, visit the Environment Agency website (at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/default.aspx) and input the post code into the box on the right hand side of the screen. If the site is in Scotland then you should check on then Scottish Environment Protection Agency website (at http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=sepa).

(Please note that these URL’s are liable to change occasionally. If you find this is the case, please inform us so we can update this information.)

You can also check on http://maps.google.co.uk/maps to identify more precisely where the site and particular caravans are and then refer back to the flood map for a more precise indicator to the flooding risk presented. Areas that in particular can be problematic in terms of insurance because of flooding are Norfolk and Lincolnshire, low-lying coastal areas of North Wales, and sites close to major rivers such as the Avon and the Severn rivers.

As with most things in life it is always better to shop around for your static caravan insurance, as this could save you a good deal of money.

You will find that nearly all static caravan/holiday home sales are of sited caravans. The sale will be made either by the owner in the case of a second-hand caravan (with the permission of the site owner), or by the site owner themselves.

Occassionally it may be possible to buy a site without a van upon it an arrange with the site owner to have it sited there. In such circumstances they will expect a significant payment for allowing the siting of a caravan as they would have expected to make a profit on the sale of a sited caravan.

As a result you will pay thousands of pounds more for a sited caravan than an unsited caravan. But you should bear in mind that the amount of insurance should cover the true unsited retail price of the caravan plus the cost of resiting a replacement caravan if it is damaged beyond repair or destroyed. You will find that some policies require that you include costs required for site clearance also.

In your contract there will be rules dictating what must happen in the event of your caravan being destroyed. This may be that the caravan must be replaced with a brand new equivalent model of caravan. If this is the case then you should buy a new-for-old caravan insurance policy, otherwise you may find that your policy falls an expensive way short of what is required.

You should bear in mind that signing up for a static caravan should not be undertaken lightly. The contract can be onerous, and you should seriously consider getting a solicitor to look over it, and make sure that you fully understand what you are signing up to before you put pen to paper. You should in particular make sure that:

  • you have security of tenure
  • you understand what will happen if you ever want to sell the caravan, and are happy with it.
  • you check if there are rules that force you to buy a new caravan after a set number of years.

A very useful publication from the Office of Fair Trading called “Guidance on unfair terms in holiday caravan agreements” can be found at http://www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/unfair_contract_terms/oft734.pdf.

Make sure that you get yourself informed if you are thinking of buying a static caravan, and make sure you have the right insurance policy.

Static Caravan Owners Insurance

Monday, January 31st, 2011

With the ‘staycation’ becoming de rigeur over the past couple of years, it is not a surprise to learn that there are more static caravans being bought then ever. Due to the financial challenges we have been facing this past couple of years, many people are skipping the expensive foreign holidays and staying in the UK instead. If you are one of these people, or thinking of becoming one then static caravan insurance is more important than ever.

Skipping the foreign holidays means caravans are getting more use, as people tend to take several trips away, rather than just the one big foreign holiday. And having made the investment in a caravan, the subsequent outlays are greatly reduced. So you can pop off at very short notice, what a great thing to be able to do.

There is also the option of renting out your static caravan when you are not using it. Given the number of people looking for accommodation, filling the caravan in the holiday season should not be too difficult, and will be a great source of additional income. This will also mean that the caravan in not left unattended as much, which is good news, but it is still very important that suitable caravan insurance is in place.

Of course if the caravan is occupied a lot more then there is a lot more chance of damage occurring, so you will need to ensure that the insurance is comprehensive enough to cover this. This will obviously mean added cost to your premiums, but the returns more than outweigh this. And you also get the benefit of lots of cheap holidays. All in all investing in a static caravan can be an excellent experience, and a fruitful one, but you need to make sure you have the right caravan insurance if you want real peace of mind.

The Importance of Static Caravan Insurance and Security

static caravan insurance

Static Caravan Insurance and Security were highlighted in the press recently with a report about a series of thefts from 28 static caravans at Porthkerry Leisure Park near to Barry in South Wales. The thieves were targetting flat screen TV’s and managed to make off with a number of them in a van they had parked near. Officers have been appealing to locals to report anyone trying to offload any tellies.

An inherent risk of static caravans is that they can be left unattended for periods of time, making them an easy target for burglars. To protect themselves owners need to be thinking primarily of two different things:

  • Insurance: When purchasing static caravan insurance it is important to ensure that you have adequate coverage. For instance, in the case of the owners of the Barry caravans, they should have made sure that their flat screen TV’s were covered, as they were valuable items, and a particular favourite of burglars. If any of these owners didn’t have such coverage, and the TV’s are not recovered then they stand to be out of pocket, as they will either have to not replace their TV, or fork out themselves for it.
  • Security: This is the first line of defence for owners. Put simply, make your static caravan as hard to break into as you can. To achieve this there are a number of different measures you can take. Invest in some good window and door locks to help prevent the intruders gaining access in the first place. Also install an alarm, so if they do get in the noise of the alarm will cause them to flee. Even the option of a dummy alarm acting as a deterrent is better than nothing.

Static Caravan Insurance and Security do go together hand-in-hand. Indeed good security is an excellent way to help keep your insurance premiums down to a minimum, as you are reducing the risk to the insurance company.

It is advisable for owners to do some investigation to ways they can improve their static caravan security. These needn’t be expensive to be effective. Even things as simple as ensuring any items that may catch the eye of a burglar are stored elsewhere when not in use. Such things as soft furnishings, and of course electrical items are the kinds of things that thieves can easily remove and sell on later.

The key is to put some thought and investigation into it, as a little effort upfront can go a long way to saving a lot of hassle and money, and hopefully having to claim on your static caravan insurance policy.
